We are hoping that the subject line "Newton Spring Farmers Market" got you so excited that you will do anything to make it a reality for 2011!
Now's the time to make it happen--
Having fresh, local food should be a norm!
New England is a great climate for growing food, so we might as well be eating it!
There is a fantastic opportunity here for someone to start a Spring market in Newton to round out the early part of the season that the town is unable to host...
A Newton Springtime Market would not compete with the current July-start market because it would be from mid-May to the end of June. In fact, some vendors at the current Tuesday Farmers’ Market may eagerly want to be part of this market to get their products to their known customers earlier in the season. This market would likely help the current market, in that it would get customers in the habit of shopping at farmers market sooner!
Grant money is available for starting and running Farmers’ Markets. Starting and managing a market can be a paid job opportunity.
Example of some details that need working out: location/parking (some places have already been offered!), governance/structure/rules (there are many examples to adapt from), inviting vendors (there would be no shortage!), collecting fees, marketing the market (could tap into a volunteer base to help with this!), finding a manager for the market (if different from the organizer).
Although there would be some work during the off-season, this Farmers’ Market job is unique in that it still leaves the summertime free!
As far as creating markets go, this is special in that it is a known consumer base. It is highly likely that it would be a successful market and may even add to the interest of the current July-start market.
Newton customers eating fresh early summer vegetables and fruits
like asparagus, spinach, carrots, salads, and strawberries;
and enjoying other market favorites like cheese, fish, bread, meat and flowers...
This could be what next May tastes like!
Let’s find someone to make this happen.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please feel free to contact us for assistance with this project. We would be happy to help network to make this market happen!
